Last year I had one goal in our Unschool/Homeschool for Veda. Reading !! Whether it’s sight words reading or Phonetic reading. Well, happy to share that we achieved it at her pace & I am proud of my girl for the hard work she did to be here today.
I don’t follow any curriculum in our Homeschool as I believe in Natural learning & Play-based learning, still I try to write some goals for a year. For 2023, I have one specific goal for us, to focus more on the Hindi language. Veda is already familiar with Hindi sounds, language, and stories from the past 4-5 years but reading, comprehension and making sentences are something I want to focus on this year.
We learned Hindi svar and vyanjan before learning English phonics which made our journey a bit easier. Hindi is a phonetic language so learning sounds can make it easier to learn it.
Here are few things we did in past few years to learn Hindi.
Reading Books to her instead of क, ख, ग books.
Instead of just introducing क, ख, ग books, I read Hindi story books to Veda since she was a baby. We all know the benefits of reading books to your kids. Reading Hindi stories made her fall in love with the Hindi language, build listening skills, and language development, and explore the textures of books and touch pages. She still loves to hear her favourite stories now and then.
Here are some of our favourite hindi books: माला की चाँदी की पायल, मुफ़्त की क़ुल्फ़ी, दस दिन, तंबि के साथ सेर।

Practicing Sounds
We started practising Hindi svar when Veda was 3 years old. At that time she use to communicate only in sounds and sign language. Practising sounds in front of a mirror helped her in sound articulation. We use to sit in front of the mirror and practiced them regularly. Me speaking and showing her the lip motion and facial movements helped her to understand the particular sound.
Matching letters
If you are following our journey from the start then you must be aware of how much we love doing matching activities. V has learned almost everything with matching. I got these Shabd Rachna which is an amazing way to learn Hindi letters and how they look. This activity has vowels and consonants and matraas that can help our kids to form words. Right now we are learning t match the svars and vyanjan.

Song & Rhymes
The most important part of learning in our home is listening to songs and rhymes. We listen to Hindi rhymes and svar vyanjan songs and love to sing along almost every day.
I would love to know if you liked this post or if you have something to share about how your child learned Hindi.
