Few years ago, we started using geography puzzles with pegs to improve fine motor skills and then moved to foam puzzles to challenge those tiny finger muscles. At the same time, we were exploring and learning about the continents, countries, and now states of India.
For our geography curriculum, I wasn’t quite prepared to introduce worksheets or books as they don’t seem to engage my little one. We prefer a more hands-on approach to learning in our homeschool curriculum, which is why I decided to incorporate this India states & capital puzzle this year.
The greatest benefit of using puzzles to learn geography is not only memorizing state names, but also understanding their locations. As we know, children with Down Syndrome are visual learners, and puzzles can be a helpful tool for teaching them such complex subjects.

If your child is a beginner, I recommend a wooden puzzle with pegs to reduce frustration and enhance fine motor skills and problem-solving abilities.
Introduce foam puzzles only if your child is ready, has a good grip, and let them play with the colourful pieces as much as they want, without introducing rules and risking boredom. Encourage them as they try to fit one piece, celebrate their efforts and reassure them if they can’t do it.
