One activity my girl can do anytime. Yup, give her playdough and she can play with it for hours by pinching, slicing, tearing, transferring, and pulling it. That’s why I thought let’s work on knife skills, fine motor skills with the help of slicing the dough in our OT.
Even though she has been using a Crinkle Cutter for the past few years for slicing vegetables, fruits, and even dough, introducing the actual size Toval knife was not easy as you need Good grip, Hand-Eye Coordination and Shoulder stability to slice.

We started with slicing play dough, soft fruits like bananas and then moved to bread, mushrooms, strawberries, and even grapes.
It took patience, time and lots of modeling which means showing her the right way to hold the knife, different levels of pressure, how to use the knife etc.

At the same time, we also practised slicing playdough with this kid’s starter knife to slice the playdough in our home OT session.
We rolled the playdough and sliced them into small chunks. Later, we made carrots, mango, and apples out of the playdough and sliced them to understand the different pressure for different shapes. It was so much fun to see her enjoying this activity.
